Look Down on Susquehanna River at Shikellamy State Park
Shikellamy State Park has two different parts to it. The best of both worlds river and mountain views. The bottom part has access to the river, boat rentals, and a hike next to the shoreline. The top part has an overlook with outstanding views of Shikellany State Park below and the Susquehanna River.
For me, it was the squirrels at the lower park that I loved. But then again, looking down at the valley was like floating on air or filling like the Queen looking down on her kingdom.
Bottom Park Area
The butterfly garden is very pretty with lots of butterflies and bees.
The railroad bridge is still working but it is a great place to get a bit of shade.
The park has a totally wonderful little trail that goes around the river.
The marina has 73 slips for lease for up to 14 days and over 90 parking spots for trailer-pulling vehicles. The area is a boaters and fishers dream. The water is so lovely with the high mountain but still close enough to town to enjoy a great breakfast before your day.
This fat squirrel guards his food. He fights any of the animals (birds and other squirrels) that come and try to take his crowning perch. He even looked he watched as I walked around. He was looking for another food bag to fill up his kingdom or if he needed to take me out before I could stealing his current stash.
His other friend ran up the tree until I left but if you like watching squirrels this is the park to do it at. The squirrels here ignore humans until they get close but if you sit back they will let you watch them.
Upper Parking Area
After leaving the Marina, the Shikellamy Overlook is about 2.3 miles away. Over the bridge and up the hill which is the first street after the bridge.
My lunch of a guacamole turkey pickle sandwich with a carrot mushroom avocado dressing…
…with a view like this. Makes for a wonderful afternoon!
From the top parking lot, you can see almost around the mountain top to the town below.
This is a great place to enjoy a day. Both areas have wonderful picnic areas. The question becomes are you a mountain person or a river person?
