Hillman State Park near Pittsburgh, PA
Hillman State Park is just outside of Pittsburgh about 30 minutes with 34.2 miles of trails for horseback riding, mountain biking, cross-country skiing, and hiking. It also has a radio controlled aircraft field. Located near Raccoon Creek State Park.
Hillman State Park is used during hunting season for hunting but over all it is one of those places that is not on the map for most people and a great place to see few or no people while enjoying the landscape. But skip it during hunting season or wear the correct clothing.
Hillman State Park includes 34.2 miles of great trails with great names. Hillman State Park does not have bathrooms or picnic areas so plan ahead. But the park includes pine and hardwood forest, meadows, valleys, rolling hills, plus several pond which have beaver and duck. This area is filled with bird for bird watchers.
The more difficult ones include Abby’s Trail at 1.9 miles, Airport West Trail which is a loop at 2.7 miles, Figure 8 Trail which is a double loop that is 3.3 miles, Miller Airport Trail which is only .7 miles, Rouse Trail at 3 miles, Sprocket Trail at 3.5 miles, Switchback Trail at 3 miles, Van Gorder Trail at 1.4 miles, and Vista Trail at .1 miles but you have to get there on the Meadow Trail.
The easiest trails include Airport South Trail which is a loop at 1.4 miles, Colt Trail at 1.4 miles, Gelding Trail at .8 mile, Haul Trail which is a loop at 1.8 miles, Meadow Trail (which takes you to a meadow…lol) at 1.8 miles, Old Mare Trail at 1.1 miles, Pitch Pine Trail at 1.1 miles, Short ‘n’ Sweet Trail at 1.5 miles, Stallion Trail at 1.7 miles, and Wetland Trail which is a loop at 2.1 miles.
