Covered Bridge Tour of Greene County, PA

Greene county is directly below Washington County in Pennslvannia. They share a Covered Bridge Festival every year except 2020 has been cancelled due to Covid19. The Greene County Covered Bridge Tour takes about 2 hours for just driving plus add extra for getting lost and enjoying other items around the bridges.

There are two ways to get to most bridges. Use the Greene County Tour directions. Or you can use the GPS and I found the following item:

In the middle of a very one way country road. They stayed in the road for a good 15 minutes just watching me and baaing and mehing at me…lol

Watch for deer, groundhogs, and other animals that might come up around any corner.

Plan to spend a bit of time here. The Carmichael Historical Society will be opening a museum shortly.

On the other side of the street and down a bit is the Greene Academy which was opened from 1810 to 1860 and was a leading academy. Albert B. Cummins graduated from here.

Also, just pass the museum is the Carmichaels Borough School Bell that was used 1893 to 1966.

Brief History

Albert Cummings was born in a log house in Carmichaels, PA. He went to school at the Greene Academy. At 19, he moved with his Uncle to Iowa. Then to Chicago to study law and became a lawyer which started his governmental career.

He was elected as the 18th Governor of Iowa and severed 3 terms. He was also a U.S. Senator for Iowa for 18 years. Twice he ran for President of the United States but failed.

As Governor, he was part of “the Iowa idea” which was a tariff rates being measured between the difference of the cost of production here and abroad but not set rates higher then need to protect home industries.

Albert Cummins is overly forgotten today. He was greatly admired during his time for his wisdom and influence. He was the Senator who could reach out to the other side and make deals. His hands are all over so many laws but especially for the Railroad laws, promoting education and labor laws, and so much more.

Albert Cummins was the guy in the room that everyone know but who took very little credit for his achievements. He was the guy that got things done but did not always get the glory because he was behind those taking the glory for his ideas, thoughts, and plans. He is only a side character in history but with Woodrow Wilson and the Roosevelt’s around, it would be hard not to be over looked by the history books.
