The Earliest Spring in 124 years
The equinox marks the official start of the spring season. This year it is taking place on March 19, 2020 at 11:50 pm Eastern Standard Time in the Northern Hemisphere.
As a tradition, we celebrate the first day of spring on March 21, but the astronomers are saying the the true date this year is March 19, which is the earliest spring has come since 1896.
Why does the First Day of Spring Change?
The first day of spring is officially when the Earth reaches a location around the sun which starts daylight being over 12 hours of light. This date chances based on the Earth’s elliptical orbit, the pull of gravity from other planets, etc.
Spring changes days because our calendar is not perfect. The Earth actually takes about 23 hours and 56 minutes to rotate around but we have a 24 hour clock. The Earth takes about 365.25 days to rotate around the sun but we have a 365 day calendar except for leap year.
Leap year helps us take care of this extra time. One extra day every 4 years. Not perfect but not bad either.
Personally
Every good weather day that comes during winter, I open my windows and allow the fresh air in. The first day of spring, I open all windows and doors for at least 30 minutes unless the weather is below 30 degrees out.
Today, I did it. It was like the birds know it was the first day of spring because they are out and about. I even got a shot of one. He was with a group and I have never seen them out my way.
I just can’t wait for everything to be green again. I want to watch the baby everything come to life. I generally have baby bunnies in my back yard every year. Also, a few trips to the zoo will bring a few more babies to see.
Happy Spring!!!!
